HONDURAS

Honduras is the third poorest country in Latin America and one of the board members has built a long-term relationship with residents in La Ceiba, Honduras. These relationships connected NUR to David Ashbey, who is President and Founder of Helping Honduras Kids. This organization is a school and orphanage that takes in abandoned and abused children from the north coast of Honduras. Mr. Ashbey communicated to NUR that gangs forced them to leave their old orphanage/school and on February 23, 2013, they moved into their new building after 3 ½ years to build. However, due to lack of funds, the new building does not have enough ceiling fans for the hot summer months and there is no kitchen storage cabinets. With your monetary donations we will provide a better living and learning environment for these children.

ARMENIA

One of the regions that has gotten our attention is Gyumri, Armenia. Gyumri, is considered to be the second largest city and has been  the center of trade and arts before 1988. However, the earthquake on December 7, 1988, flattened the city and took away 25,000 lives. Although years have gone by, due to economical hardships the city has not been fully rebuilt. Yet the amazing communities have never given up and are still fighting with great faith and hope to spring back to life. NUR believes that empowering the locals is the best way to help Gyumri. Therefore NUR aims to sponsor the tuition of young students in their education for various forms of arts.

COLOMBIA

With one of its Board Members originally from the Chiquitines Adoption Center in Cali, Colombia, NUR has engaged in a dialogue with the orphanage to examine what is needed.  The new director has indicated Chiquitines has a difficult time acquiring school supplies for the children.  Clothing, food, physical education as well as field trips are provided, but school supplies for the children's classes (which take part outside the orphanage at neighboring schools) are lacking.  Through continued communication, NUR aims to further develop this relationship with Chiquitines to ensure no child in the orphanage is without adequate school supplies in order to take full advantage of any educational opportunities in their near or distant future.

One of the objectives NUR has set for this year is to assess the needs in regions where one or more members of the Board has lived. We strongly believe that it is important to take time in understanding the environments of each region before developing a solution.
